Myocarditis is inflammation of the myocardium (heart muscle).

The myocardium is the middle muscular layer of the heart.

When the myocardium becomes inflamed, it can cause symptoms listed below.


Myocarditis Symptoms

Symptoms of myocarditis may include:

  • Chest pain

  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

  • Palpitations or irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmias)

  • Lower extremity swelling (edema)

  • Fatigue

  • General malaise

    • Headache, fever, decreased appetite, etc.

  • Lightheadedness
